Okay, there’s special and then there’s very special. This hideaway in the heart of Cologne falls into the latter category. I often talk about how a hotel needs to have a soul. This is what makes it stand out from the crowd, and this hideaway certainly does. In this case, the soul of Michael Kaune, which perfectly matches the beautiful neo-Gothic building, the old city archive. Michael was looking for a place where he could bring together his love of design, art and beauty. Not a museum, but low-threshold and everyday, so that everyone can enjoy his wonderful collection of modern design.

In his search, Michael found the perfect building in his hometown and created a perfect synergy between old and new. Among others, the designs of Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Vernor Panton are now the decor of this hotel with 34 rooms, not exhibited but real objects of use as once intended. They make each room unique. Whether you stay in the small but cosy single room or in one of the fantastic and spacious suites (absolutely recommended for a special weekend getaway), it is comfortable and very good.

The staff is super friendly and welcoming, they are happy to help you with the right insider tips for your stay in the surprisingly cool Cologne. Downstairs there’s also a cosy bar, perfect for a drink or for a breakfast to start the day. You’ll also find a wide selection of art books and magazines in the library. 

So if you have something to celebrate, a special occasion or you are a modern design lover, I can highly recommend this unique hideaway. It’s worth to splash your money. Just one last advice: Don’t spread the word!
