CHARMING AND TRENDSETTING ‘GREEN’ CITY HIDEAWAY

Centrally located in the ‘Kop van Zuid’, a vibrant and trendy new area in Rotterdam, and with a spectacular view of the river ‘Nieuwe Maas’, you will find a beautiful monument. The building dates from 1879 and is a former custom house, where ships registered their goods. It’s named after businessman, ship-owner and politician Lodewijk Pincoffs,who played an important part in the development of the Rotterdam harbours.

Pincoffs owned the former custom house and kept his office at the Poortgebouw, or gate building, opposite the custom house. Hosts Edwin and Karen, both former journalists, took the plunge in 2002 and created a charming and luxurious small hotel in this historical building. The concept is exceptional for Rotterdam, where you will mostly find the bigger hotel chains; the SuiteHotel has only 17 rooms and still oozes an atmosphere of times past, impressively mixed with a contemporary interior.

The hotel is GreenKey certified, an eco-label awarded to companies that are committed to improving their environmental performance. They were one of the first in the city with a ‘Green’ mindset. Very trendsetting.

I highly recommend a city trip to Rotterdam. It may have something to do with the fact that a large part of the city had to be rebuilt after World War II or it maybe because it has one of the biggest harbours in the world. But there is something about Rotterdam. Something edgy and exciting that I would almost call un-Dutch. This Local Hideaway is the perfect base from which to start exploring this wonderful city. But as is often the case in big cities, you have to know where to go.
